Noor Boiten
The Future is Under Construction
How can digital spaces, such as the internet, help us to be more ourselves and express ourselves as we wish? In the multimedia installation 'The Future is Under Construction', artist Noor Boiten (1999) invites you to go on a journey of discovery in Museum Hilversum, where these questions are central. This exhibition is in collaboration with Stichting Gooi & Vecht Inclusief.

The Future is Under Construction
In this multimedia installation you travel to an imaginary world, which originates from Boiten's personal search for their gender identity. The video figures you encounter along the way represent the freedom that the digital world can offer. Especially for Generation Z (people born between approx. 1997 and 2012) places on the internet, such as forums and online games, have been important for their self-development.
Boiten discovered that in the digital world you can always and at any time change your identity and persona. The title of the work refers to a vision of the future that is literally and figuratively still in the making: a digital world in which everyone has complete freedom to be who they want to be.
The boxes of ‘man’ and ‘woman’
With this work, the artist questions the boxes of ‘man’ and ‘woman’ that our society often uses to define someone’s identity. Boiten knows from own experience how liberating it can be to embrace a different gender identity, such as non-binary. At the same time, searching for the right ‘label’ can also be confusing, because you do not always recognize yourself in the expectations that society has about gender identity.
About Noor Boiten
Noor Boiten is a research-based visual artist. Noor Boiten investigates the impact of digital visual culture on gender, authorship, and online image consumption and distribution. As a digital native, born in the generation that grew up parallel to the internet, Noor Boiten is intrigued by the (im)materiality of the online spaces we interact with on a daily basis.
Boiten developed questions around their sexuality and gender, and the internet – which was within reach – was a meaningful tool through which Boiten could get to know and understand theirselves better. The possibilities on the internet are endless and flexible, and create space for those who function outside the framed, binary edges of our society. In their mixed-media installations, Boiten combines sculpture, video, text, 3D animation and photography. These reconstructions investigate the materiality of the invisible digital spaces we come into contact with and offer an alternative perspective on the influence of digital culture on our identity formation.
Boiten received a Bachelor of Photography, Film and Design from the Sint Joost Academy in Breda in 2023. In 2024, Boiten was part of the Fotodok Lighthouse talent group. And their work has been exhibited regularly, including during the Limburg Biennale in Marres (2024), a group exhibition in WORM Rotterdam (2024), during the Steenbergen Stipendium exhibition in the Nederlands Fotomuseum (2023) and BredaPhoto (2022).
