Zilveren Camera 2023

News photography deals with everything that is going on in society, sets topics on the agenda, and records developments that form the basis of collective memory. The Silver Camera is the most important prize for photojournalists in the Netherlands and is traditionally exhibited first in Museum Hilversum. A wonderful, endless ramble along big and small stories. All winning photos and the photos of the other nominees can be seen during this exhibition. Because is the Zilveren Camera's 75th anniversary, we are also showing historical material in the museum.

Winner Zilveren Camera 2023

Palestinian-Dutch documentary photographer and filmmaker Sakir Khader won the Silver Camera 2023 with the impressive black-and-white series Life in the West Bank on Oct. 7. Photographer Sakir Khader made this series last year in Jenin, a West Bank refugee camp. According to the jury, they are all strong images that stick with you and touch you. "The series stands out for its photographic quality and emotional impact. You can see that the photographer has been involved with this subject for a long time and knows how to connect with the inhabitants of the region. This series points out that while the eyes have been massively focused on Gaza since October 7, the residents of the West Bank have also lived under high tension throughout the year, with tragic consequences."

Prize for Storytelling

The Prize for Storytelling went to Tina Farifteh with Kitten or Refugee? According to the jury, she confrontationally pushes the viewer to face uncomfortable facts in a short documentary. "Her personal approach makes the universal palpable and touches on something that affects us all. With 'Kitten or Refugee?' Farifteh makes us look at reality anew: she confronts preconceived opinions, tilts the picture and turns the issue on its head."

Paul Peters Photo Prize

Nynke Brandsma with the series Max won the Paul Peters Photo Prize for social photography. According to the jury, the photographs bring you close to his world. "The apparent choice to live your life outside socially accepted norms, free from rigid frameworks, is so convincingly portrayed that it makes you think about the social impoverishment of our society. Brandsma wants us to look without judgment and question why these delineated ideas of how to live are actually there, that standard of what is seen as successful and fulfilling. Max eschews that. Max is the jester. Max is free."
